Geeky community buzz

Geeky community buzz, originally uploaded by Br3nda
here's the end whiteboard from my session at kiwi.
it was a bit of a troll that Wellington's tech community has got it going on, and Auckland doesn't.
The end conclusion, which was shared with wellington and auckland geeks, is that Wellington people are very open to telling each other what they're doing. Auckland companies have an idea that profit requires secrecy. I think they're wrong.
One person said that Wellington's events were all non-profit. I had to object that every one of those events are linked to profit in some way - even if there is no entry fee. The attendees come away after lots of networking and armed with new information. Business is done at these events, and done by geeks.
as an aside: i can't describe how much i don't want to be the community lady for wellington. So many women get into technology and then become the soft-tech community dispute-solver person. There's buckets of very awesome women doing that already. Can't i stay in the tech please?

"While copyright owners can take legal action against those Internet users engaging in infringing peer to peer file-sharing, it is difficult for them to identify any particular user. In addition, they would then have to take the users to court." it's too hard to idntify who is breaking the law, so lets just punish anyone we want.

A controversial amendment to the NZ Copyright Act will mean that if a file-sharer is accused of copyright infringement, they are immediately presumed guilty.
The implementation of Section 92A would force the termination of internet connections and websites without evidence or trial, bypassing the...

SoCNoC, pronouned "sock-nock", is the Southern Cross Novel Challenge.
http://www.kiwiwriters.org/my/challenge/site/socnoc-2008.html
Every year thousands of writers create novels of 50,000 words in 30 days as part of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). SoCNoC gives writers in the southern hemisphere the benefit of a long weekend and wintry weather that we don't get for the November challenge.
awesome stuff - and they have a twitter presence at http://twitter.com/kiwiwriters
p.s. another awesome thing is that http://kiwiwriters.org is built apon a opensource frame work called Zaapt. This is completely homegrown kiwi stuff - written in perl and powered by mason and postgresql.
