15 seconds fame as "Wellington's Brenda Wallace cruises to victory in predictions contest"

There are lotsa quotes of stuff i said in this Computer World story by Stephen Bell :
"Wellington's Brenda Wallace cruises to victory in predictions contest"
http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/technology/android-boosted-ipad-dism...

Well-known Wellington geek Brenda Wallace cruised to victory for the second year running, in developer group Unlimited Potential’s contest for the best predictions for ICT in the year ahead.

A growing number of organisations, especially government agencies, will choose open-source software during 2010, for the wrong reasons, Wallace predicts. Referring to the Public Sector Remix open-source desktop trial, she says, “I suspect they’re doing it because Microsoft wouldn’t give them the price they wanted. I hope they’ll stay open-source, because it gives them freedom and control and breaks a monopoly.”

Libraries will begin renting e-books, she says. More tablet computers will enter the market, running “quasi-operating systems” such as Google’s Android rather than full-blown Linux, Apple or Windows; “but users won’t know or care about the OS; they’ll just use [the devices].”

The move to open government “will get creepy”, Wallace says, observers will “stalk” politicians, reporting their movements through Twitter and other real-time forums. “I’d like to see them do it to the lobbyists,” she says; “I’d like to know who they’re having lunch with.”

Laconica adventures in utf8 lands

I've been hacking code for Laconica (the open source software that powers http://identi.ca, http://mozilli.ca and more).

A new stable release is about to happen - 0.8.1 (any day now).

Included is my utf hashtag patch. This allows #hashtags like #Māori or #Gelöbnix #рогатку #日本 etc.

The utf8 also ends up in your browser address bar, so you get urls like this:
http://identi.ca/tag/어이

Some folks say strange things like "how will anyone type that!". Well, not everyone has your keyboard. Some folks have keyboards like this:
Hangul keyboard layout

a better question is how do folks with that keyboard type 어이.kr? Why are "we" making people in korea type roman characters? It's not part of their language.

Bring on Generic top level domains names, so we see domains like 你好.中国. Don't get hung up on how westerners will type these.

open source feminism

I've pondered for some days writing a post being an woman working with and contributing to open source software for the Down under feminists carnival - such a post would include how awesome it is to work in this great field.

Such a blog post would also include the seriously negative sexist incidents that happen from time to time. Especially the high profile ones. (They're not the norm, and they happen infrequently)

In the past when I've reported on such negative incidents on my blog (3 times) I've received email telling me to stop pointing it out. Usually it's from open source project leaders and people I do respect in the open source community. The form of the email is usually a very very long essay explaining that describing what has happened to me or my friends at a conference is going to damage the community, the project, and is going to drive women away from the field. Please be quiet.

They ask me why I want to do such a horrible thing to open source as to blog about the things that happen. Very clearly I'm part of the problem by reporting it. Often they'll throw in something about me not understanding how open source culture works.

So on that note, I'm not going to write the post after all - I don't have the energy.

Instead I encourage you to check out the Geek feminism wiki

be licensed under an Open Source license.

The LCA2010 Papers Committee welcome proposals for Papers on the
following topics:

Things i wish FOSS projects told me

There are some things i reckon are the minimum infomation a Free & Open Source Software project should have clearly on or one link away from the front page of the project website

1) What the product does
2) What licence is is released under
3) A Download link for the stable version
4) A link to find the source/version control
5) How to contribute

So, i did a quick Survey of some projects that are popular with New Zealanders:

What is it? licence download link source/vcs Contribute
firefox The Browser That Has It All no yes no no (bug reports only)
Drupal an open source content management platform no yes no yes
Koha Koha is the first open-source Integrated Library System (ILS) yes yes no not sure

Scoop: NZ Linux Community reject copyright law

Wednesday, 11 March 2009, 2:56 pm
Press Release: LinuxChix NZ

New Zealand Linux Industry and Community reject guilt on accusation copyright laws Press release by LinuxChix NZ, Waikato Linux Users' Group and Wellington Linux Users' Group 11-March-2009

A new threat has emerged against Linux and other Open Source Software: New Zealand's new, ill-conceived copyright laws that pave the way for users to be disconnected on accusation of copyright infringement.

Copyright threats against Linux are nothing new. In 2003 The SCO Group, a commercial entity from the USA, falsely claimed copyright on parts of the Linux operating system. It took a long time, over four years for these claims to be declared as false by the courts and thrown out. Even though SCO Group's copyright claims were found baseless, the drawn-out legal process was prohibitively expensive and held the potential to severely damage the future of Linux.

Many New Zealand businesses and community groups fear the threat of false copyright accusations against Linux could result in internet disconnection and website takedowns without due process. There is no requirement under the new law to prove the accusations, nor are there any sanctions against those who make false ones.

Already, the country's third largest ISP, TelstraClear, has stated it will take down sites accused of hosting copyright infringing material without investigation or verification of the claims.

Vote for me in the Wellingtonista awards

I'm in the finals for a Wellingtonisa Award, for Best Contribution by a Wellingtonian to the Internet

If there is something going on in Wellington that involves Linux, Drupal, open-source software, geek women or beer, you can bet that Brenda will be involved in it. As one of the driving forces behind the Girl Geek Dinners, she’s actively working to increase women working in technology. With her championing of open source, she’s building the knowledge base in the world, and with her constant Tweets, she’s keeping Wellington entertained – although we have no idea how she manages to do so much at once

All you need to do is go down to question 15 and VOTE

Opensource awards, who are your picks?

The New Zealand open source awards are tomorrow night - I wanted to ask what your picks are for winners? The finalists are listed on the NZOSA website

Open Source Contributor
This is a really hard one, as there are massive contributions by all four contributors. My pick is Francois Marier, due to the huge number of contributions as a debian package maintainer for over 50+ packages.
