new flickr rippr release
Submitted by Shiny on Fri, 09/07/2010 - 22:54i've just tagged a new release of Flickr Ripper drupal module. New feature is filter imported photos by tag.
Flickr Rippr reads flickr.com for users latest public photos, and turns these into content (nodes) on your drupal website.
You need only publish to flickr.com, and they will automagically appear on your drupal website after each cron run. Join this up with the Views module and make photo galleries, block, and other awesomes.

ACTA - It's bad. Very bad
Submitted by Shiny on Wed, 04/11/2009 - 14:33A draft of the ACTA treaty has been leaked just as government representatives of the world begin secret negotiations in Korea today. This treaty originates in the USA, and is being negotiated with many countries including New Zealand.
Boingboing have some analysis of the leaked draft::
* That ISPs have to proactively police copyright on user-contributed material. This means that it will be impossible to run a service like Flickr or YouTube or Blogger, since hiring enough lawyers to ensure that the mountain of material uploaded every second isn't infringing will exceed any hope of profitability.
* That ISPs have to cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability. This means that your entire family could be denied to the internet -- and hence to civic participation, health information, education, communications, and their means of earning a living -- if one member is accused of copyright infringement, without access to a trial or counsel.
* That the whole world must adopt US-style "notice-and-takedown" rules that require ISPs to remove any material that is accused -- again, without evidence or trial -- of infringing copyright. This has proved a disaster in the US and other countries, where it provides an easy means of censoring material, just by accusing it of infringing copyright.

Submitted by Shiny on Thu, 11/09/2008 - 22:17at last month's Wellington Perl Mongers I did a short presentation on Opportunities for networking with geeks in Wellington... for the slide, i used a flickr set - this worked remarkably well. It adapted to screen (projector) resolution and played just as I expected.

flickrippr coming soon!! promise~!!
Submitted by Shiny on Sat, 28/06/2008 - 23:11What's this? the javascript flickr "badge" on brenda's blog? the author of flickrrippr isn't using flickrrippr?
Well now - i just haven't got the whole of flickrrippr working in Drupal 6 yet. the basics are there (and in drupal CVS) but not ready for production yet.
despite the "badge", i still prefer to live with javascript off.

next sunday, the 14th, i'm off to linux.conf.au
That's a whole weeks conference on linux.
It's in Sydney this year. I'm leaping on a plane, with 2 awesome ladies, penny, and a random sysadmin person who doesn't have a blog.
after the conference i'm staying the extra weekend in sydney, as well as the monday, which is Wellington anniversary..
Check my photo stream on flickr during the week..
I'll also try and blog a bit about the things i see, do, and learn over there.
To any and all my clients who may be reading this... i don't have a shiny new laptop, so i can't be working while in Sydney.. send your outrage to my boss ;-)
