No Plastic Bags

South Australia just did, Ireland said NO years ago - it's time for New Zealand to do the right thing and say NO to Plastic Bags.

It is ridiculously easy to stop using them, much easier than learning how to ride a bike, brush your teeth or tie your shoes. It is this simple - when you go shopping, take your own reusable bags and when someone asks you if you want a plastic one say no.

I was living in Ireland at the time the new law came into force. Plastic bags weren't banned, but a tax was introduced which meant retailers had to charge for each bag - I can't remember if it was 5 cents or 15. I can say that the positive impact on the environment was swift. Before the tax we saw many bags blowing around Dublin and catching in trees. Within a couple of weeks there were almost none.

It was amusing to watch consumers commenting on the TV news the day the new tax came into force. I particularly recall one curmudgeonly old woman who defiantly pronounced that the tax wouldn't work on her - she was going to take her own bags and reuse them!
